Summary

Research: Mohanty's research contributions can be categorized into four broad classes. (a) Study of the phase diagram of strong interactions. He has contributed towards the establishment of the phase transition and transition temperature of the QCD phase diagram. This work is published in Science (332 (2011) 1525) and was declared by Physics World as among the 10 best papers in 2011. He has worked on finding the critical point region in the QCD phase diagram through a series of pioneering papers published in Physical Review Letters (vol - 105, 112 & 113). He was one of the key persons to start the experimental program for the study of QCD phase diagram,  called the Beam Energy Scan Program at the Relativistic Heavy-Ion Collider Facility, BNL, USA. He led the program in the initial years as the Deputy Spokesperson of the experiment.  (b) Establishing a new state of matter - Quark Gluon Plasma. He has made sseminal contributions towards measuring the experimental signatures of QGP, some of which includes Jet Quenching, Strangeness Enhancement, & Partonic Collectivity. (c) Discovery of the heaviest anti-matter nuclei. As the Physics Analysis Co-ordinator of STAR experiment he led a team physicists to find anti-alpha (nuclei with 2 anti-protons and 2 anti-neutrons) and anti-hypertriton (nuclei with anti-proton, anti-neutron and anti-lambda) in nuclear interactions. These work which has been published in Nature (473 (2011) 353) and Science (328 (2010) 58) have implications across the fields of nuclear physics, astro-particle physics and cosmology. (d) He put in several years of dedicated work on the measurement of  inclusive photon production in heavy-ion collisions (at SPS, RHIC and LHC) using detectors which were build in India. He has made significant contributions towards looking for signatures of an exciting physics phenomena put forward by J. D. Bjorken and F. Wilczek - Disoriented Chiral Condensates (phenomena in Strong interactions that is analogous to domains in ferromagnets) in high energy collisions.  Due to these contributions he was invited by the Editorial Board of Physics Reports to write a review article, which is published as Phys. Rept. 414 (2005) 263.

Awards and Honours:  Mohanty is the winner of the Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prize in Science and Technology in the year 2015. He was ellected as a Fellow of the Indian Academy of Sciences, Bangalore and National Academy of Sciences, Allahabad in 2017. He received the prestigious J C Bose National Fellowship from DST, Govt. of India in 2017. He is also the recipient of the Swarnjayanti Fellowship given by the Department of Science and Technology, Govt. of India in the year 2010-2011 and the Outstanding Research Investigator Award - DAE Science Research Council Fellowship in the year 2010. He was also awarded the DAE Young Scientist Award in the year 2006, recieved the INSA Young Scientist Medal and the became the Associate of Indian Academy of Sciences, Bangalore in the year 2003.
